Kelly Gallagher is beautiful on the outside, but as far as she’s concerned, it’s the interior that counts. A well-built brunette with clear, glass-blue eyes, Kelly hails from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where from an early age, she demonstrated an interest in her surroundings. According to her mother, Kelly used to rearrange the family’s furniture – for someone termed by The New Yorker as “the presiding grand dame of West Coast interior design”, those are humble but telling beginnings. “My mother is a designer, and that’s my ultimate goal,” Kelly told us in her original Playmate File. “I want to own a marvelous design and furnishings business.” After a stint at the Massachusetts College of Art, Kelly did some work in film production, but with talent like hers, she was either going big or going home – so she marched herself straight to Playboy’s Studio West and demanded a test. “You can ask any of my friends,” says Kelly. “I’m completely uninhibited. Everybody has a body, and I want to show mine!” Following her appearance as Miss September 1994, Kelly funneled her Playmate funds into her business, which has since grown into a large firm, Kelly Wearstler Interior Design. Kelly’s signature style, termed by some as ‘Hollywood Regency’ and ‘Maximalism’, earned her contracts with big names like Bergdorf Goodman and Viceroy Resorts. She’s released four books – Domicilum Decoratus, Hue, Modern Glamour and Rhapsody – and she’s the author of several product lines, including clothing and home goods. “By no means do I drink and dance until two in the morning,” says Kelly. “I’m really focused on my business!” That said, our Miss September can always make time for the right person. On any given Sunday, Kelly can serve breakfast in bed, take in an art museum, go out for dinner and watch the sun set on the beach in short order. “My turn-ons are fabulous, intense minds,” she says. “Men and women are completely different creatures – they just don’t belong. Still, I like having a boyfriend – it’s nice to have somebody you can count on. That’s important to me.” Whether as Miss September or a high-powered designer, we can definitely count on Kelly.
