Model and entrepreneur Iman – whose name means ‘faith’ in Arabic – was more than destined for fame. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Iman moved to Kenya to study at the University of Nairobi, where she was discovered by famed photographer Peter Beard – the very same photographer who later shot her 1986 feature for Playboy. Hot on her heels, Iman moved to New York and hit the ground running as a Vogue model – hailed as America's first African supermodel, she became a favorite with Versace, Yves Saint-Laurent, Helmut Newton and countless other designers and fashion photographers. Whether she’s taking calls at her desk as CEO of a cosmetics firm, making groundbreaking humanitarian efforts, or on the arm of famous husband David Bowie, Iman is on top of the world – and in Somali, Arabic, French, English or any other of her many languages, talk about global chic.
